There are also other models (Diamond/Platinum) used by some publishers where final published versions are made immediately Open Access without the payment of an APC by the author or institution. You can find journals that do not charge publishing fees listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (filter DOAJ by "without APCs").
In most cases, you can comply with UEL and REF Open Access policies without paying a fee by self-archiving your research in the UEL Research Repository.
You can also publish Open Access without a fee by taking advantage of one of our transformative agreements (further details below).
UEL Library, Archives and Learning Services has Read & Publish agreements with Elsevier and Wiley. UEL researchers can publish their review and primary research articles open access with no charge to authors in journals that are part of our "read & publish" deals with these publishers. To be eligible to take advantage of the deals you need to be the corresponding author for the output.
JISC’s Read and Publish agreement with Elsevier: UEL corresponding authors can publish Open Access in Elsevier's hybrid (subscription) journals. The deal is in place for articles accepted from 1 January 2022 until 31 December 2024. In addition, UEL corresponding authors publishing in Elsevier's fully gold open access journals can receive a 15% discount on an APC.
Wiley’s JISC agreement: APC costs will come from a shared national fund for participating institutions.
